What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?
An Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is the fundamental legal requirement for any business, startup, or individual looking to start an import or export business in India.
Simply put, no commercial export or import activity can be conducted by an Indian business without a valid IEC. It acts as your official gateway to the global market.
At Efilingway, we simplify Import Export Code (IEC) registration by handling all legal formalities under the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), ensuring a hassle-free experience for you.

Key Features of an Import Export Code (IEC)
-
PAN-Based Digital Identity: Your IEC is a 10-digit alphanumeric code that is directly mapped to your business or personal PAN (Permanent Account Number). This ensures seamless data integration with the Income Tax and Customs departments.
-
Lifetime Validity: Once issued, your IEC is valid for the lifetime of your business. There are no recurring renewal fees or expiration dates. (Note: The DGFT only requires a simple online profile update once a year between April and June).
-
Zero Return Filing: Unlike GST or Income Tax, an IEC does not require you to file any monthly, quarterly, or annual compliance returns. It is purely a licensing code, making it incredibly easy to maintain.
-
Unlocks Global Banking: You cannot legally receive money from foreign clients or pay international suppliers without an IEC. It is mandatory for generating an Authorized Dealer (AD) Code with your bank, which prevents your foreign currency from being frozen by the RBI.
-
Gateway to Government Subsidies: Holding an active IEC makes your business eligible for lucrative export promotion schemes like RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products) and Duty Drawback, significantly boosting your profit margins.
-
Available for Individuals: You do not need to have a Private Limited Company or an LLP to go global. Even a sole proprietor or an individual can apply for an IEC using their personal PAN and a basic current or savings bank account.
-
Mandatory for E-Commerce Exports: If you plan to sell “Made in India” goods on international platforms like Amazon Global Selling, eBay, or Etsy, possessing an IEC is a strict prerequisite before you can list your products.
Minimum Requirements for Import Export Code (IEC) Registration
-
A Valid PAN Card: The entire IEC system is PAN-based. If you are applying as a Sole Proprietor or an individual, your personal PAN is required. For Partnerships, LLPs, or Companies, the official Business PAN must be used.
-
An Active Bank Account: You must have an operational bank account (Current Account or Savings Account) registered in the name of the applicant or the business entity. The DGFT requires a pre-printed canceled cheque or a bank certificate to verify these details.
-
Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number: The modern DGFT portal operates on a 100% paperless, Aadhaar-based e-Sign authentication system. The authorized signatory or proprietor must have their Aadhaar card linked to an active mobile number to receive the mandatory e-KYC OTPs.
-
A Valid Business Address: You must have a physical address from which your import/export operations will be managed. This can be a commercial office space, a manufacturing unit, or even your residential home address (for individuals and home-based exporters).
-
Digital Signature Certificate (Optional but Recommended): While Aadhaar OTP works for most individuals, a Class-3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is mandatory for LLPs and Companies to sign the IEC application digitally on the government portal.
